- Meals and between-meal snacks cause bacteria to
grow, which cause damage to your teeth and gums. The bacteria releases
acids that attack tooth enamel.
- Limit
the number of between-meal snacks and beverages .
When you do
eat
snack foods, remember to brush afterwards.
- Brush thoroughly twice a day (minimum) with
a fluoride toothpaste, whose package is
marked with the American Dental Association's
Seal of Approval.
- Floss at least once each day to remove plaque
(a thin film of bacteria) from
between teeth.
- Replace your toothbrush quarterly, or sooner
if the bristles are frayed. Worn bristles will
not clean teeth effectively and could
aggravate gums.
- Quit smoking. Smoking worsens gum disease.
